What's with the tiny handle on the syrup bottle?

Gloria from Quebec City, QC writes:  The tiny handles on maple syrup bottles are useless, eh?  Or, are they?  I'd be curious to get your take on it.

Response:  Dear Gloria, Thanks for listening and thanks for your question! Believe it or not, that tiny handle has a name: it's a skeuomorph. According to Reader's Digest (Canada), maple syrup companies used the handle as a decorative element on the glass bottle. It was a tribute to the large ceramic jugs used in the 19-century to store molasses and liquor in many Canadian homes.

According to the brewery's instagram post, adding the noisy bugs to the drink gives it a "lobster-like" flavour sensation. Would you try it?
